Table of Contents

Over all these years as a sex therapist, people have been reaching out to me day in and out with heartbreaking messages like:

  • My partner has lost interest in sex and it’s destroying our relationship
  • Our sex life has died out since having babies and this makes me want to seek intimacy elsewhere.
  • With work and stress, our bedroom life has become mechanical. Please suggest me ways to fix this.

Now, while all such messages break my heart, What I want to tell everyone is that these issues cannot be solved with a quick fix or advice over Dms.

Sex therapy is the only way to discover the root cause of the problem, understand the obstacles and find practical, actionable solutions to restore a happy, healthy and fulfilling sex life.

This is exactly why today, we’re diving into understanding sex therapy. Whether you’re navigating sexual problems, looking to revive your sex life or trying to get over past sexual trauma, understanding the ins and outs of sex therapy can be extremely useful for you.

Let’s explore the world of sex therapy, learn the benefits and also differentiate between sex therapy and sex coaching.

What Is Sex Therapy?

Sex therapy is a therapeutic speciality and it focuses in treating various issues related to sexual dysfunctions (ie) sexual problems and concerns such as arousal issues, performance concerns, low or absent sexual desire, difficulty with orgasm, sexual pain disorders, etc.

Sex therapy is a therapeutic speciality and it focuses in treating various issues related to sexual dysfunctions (ie) sexual problems and concerns such as arousal issues, performance concerns, low or absent sexual desire, difficulty with orgasm, sexual pain disorders, etc.

What Does A Sex Therapist Do?

A certified sex therapist helps individuals and couples who come to them to talk about issues within their relationship like

  • One of them having higher sexual desire with their needs unmet by partner or
  •  someone who has low sexual desire and is looking to increase it to satisfy the partner
  • Couples coming in to talk how to even want pleasure or feel like they are worthy of pleasure after child birth.

But the spectrum of sex therapy is much larger than that because not just couples but a lot of people individually need support in

  • Defining themselves sexually, trying to understand what their sexual orientation is.
  • Mid aged singles trying to overcome sexual shame having grown up in cultures that teach sex to be a bad thing and
  • TONS of similar and varied issues.

Types Of Sex Therapy

There are majorly 2 types of sex therapy that you can opt based on your needs:

  1. Individual Sex Therapy: Individual sex therapy is for those of you facing personal issues that affects your sexual function. It’s ideal if you are dealing with personal sexual trauma or wanting to improve your sexual health individually.

If you and your partner are facing conflicts related to intimacy, want to improve communication and want to improve your sexual connection, then please take up couples sex therapy.

Difference Between Sex Therapy and Sex Coaching

It’s also important to know the differences between sex therapy and sex coaching as they serve different purposes:

  • Sex Therapy: Sex therapists are trained as mental health providers. They focus on issues around mental health, emotional well-being and relationship well-being.They look at how sexual problems can be caused by things like depression, anxiety, relationship problems and past trauma. Sex therapists aim to weave all these together to help clients achieve their goals.
  • Sex Coaching: Sex coaches like me use a holistic approach where we work with our clients to really normalise conversations around sex and sexuality exploring their values, attitudes and beliefs around sex and sexuality. We provide tips, tools and techniques to make them feel more confident and sexually empowered.

Finding The Right Sex Therapist

If you are wondering how to find the right sex therapist, here are some tips:

1. Check credentials: Please make sure the therapist is a certified sex therapist with proper training in human sexuality. Also make sure the therapist holds certifications from reputed bodies like the Indian Association for Sexology

2. Ask About Approach: Different therapists use different approaches. Hence understand whether they offer short term or long term therapy based on your needs.

3.Ensure Comfort: It’s very important to feel comfortable discussing personal issues with your therapist. So please make sure to find someone you can openly share your concerns and work towards effective solutions.
