Why good sex starts outside the bedroom

People wanting a better sex life, generally look for answers inside the bedroom.

Few things that immediately seem like they would help are trying different positions in sex, new techniques of doing the routine things, ‘longer foreplay’, adding some sex toys maybe.

While these are no doubt great ways to add spark to your sex life, if the bedrock is shaky, no amount of toys are able to fix that, unfortunately.

Lets consider an example to make the idea easier to digest – think about charging your phone.

I’m sure you would not expect it to last all day if you only plugged it in for five minutes. BUT so many of us expect intimacy to magically appear at night after spending the entire day disconnected from our partner.

Intimacy needs time, and care, and affection. It is built through the small tiny magical moments between lovers.

Few layperson examples :

  • The 6-second hug before leaving for work (not just a quickie, a proper heart-to-heart hug)
  • The “How did your meeting go?” + genuinely listening to how it went
  • The random text saying, “I’m thinking of you.” (can be flirty variations too- I’m thinking of the dress you wore yesterday 😉
  • The compliment that isn’t trying to lead to sex!
  • Non-demanding touch is CRUCIAL for the Erotic Thread between partners.
  • Playing with each other, flirting with each other, dating each other

While these moments may not seem sexual per se, but they create the emotional safety and connection that intimacy grows from.

Sex therapist and researcher Esther Perel writes, “Foreplay starts at the end of the previous orgasm.”

In effect it is a simple sentence, but it changes everything.

It duly reminds us that intimacy is not a single “event”, and that sexual desire is often shaped by how we relate to each other every day.

Research supports this idea too. A meta-analysis of 93 studies involving more than 38,000 people found that better sexual communication was consistently associated with greater sexual satisfaction and relationship satisfaction. In other words, it’s not just whether couples talk about sex, it’s how they communicate that makes a difference. #

People never stop wanting intimacy, they stop feeling emotionally safe, appreciated, seen, or desired.

EXACTLY why a better sex life often begins with better conversations, more curiosity, and small moments of connection that have nothing to do with sex itself.

Three takeaways for you:

1. Intimacy cannot be ‘switched on’ at bedtime. Rather it is built through everyday moments of attention, affection, and presence. The foundation needs to be strong, remember.

2. “Feeling” desired starts long before physical touch. Being appreciated, listened to, and emotionally understood are just as important as what happens in the bedroom.

3. The Erotic Thread matters more than you would think. A hug, a compliment, a thoughtful question, or a genuine thank you may seem ordinary, but together, they create the foundation for a more connected intimate life.

Intimacy is all about showing up for each other consistently, one small moment at a time.
